crowd entertained with his company’s story, and how by using the HP Mosaic software it has been able to produce multiple versions of can design, giving the beers a personality and effectively a salesman in every store. Mosaic feeds into the labels printed for his cans on HP Indigo by Peacock Bros. Davidson said he once had 12,000 differently named beer labels produced in a day.
He outlined how the company turned its weakness – its small size compared with the big brewers – into a strength, by using its personality, always printing in CMYK because it wasn’t continu- ally trying to shave costs, and putting thought-provoking labels onto the cans, to cause customers to pause in the aisles and pick up a can.
REVOLUTION PRINT
Next up was print service provider and self-described print geek Leon Wilson, from Ballarat-based Revolution Print, with an inspiring story of transforming the general offset jobbing printer into an advanced digital print shop.
Six months ago Revolution took the step to begin digital label printing, with Wilson taking the time to understand what the market really needed, and setting up his digital label printing business accordingly. He gave as much, if not more, thought to the workflow as to the production kit, which was the full AccurioLabel 230 from Konica Minolta, with GM convert- ing unit. He set up a full digital workflow, with 24/7 ordering through the online set- up. All the software was ready when the press arrived. He had also bought 50 fin- ishing dies, and had ordered in a full range of labelstocks and laminates, and worked out the pricing.
He had clearly thought it through well. It took just a month to get it up and running, then the first month of produc- tion saw it break even, and it has been in profit every month since. A typical new customer was the micro-winery that needed just 600 labels for its 600 bottles of wine. Wilson said while this was a small order, that winery owner then told his friends and fellow winery owners, who then came in and ordered their own labels. Wilson said, “We are printing their dream.”
