The stage was set for the much- anticipated trade-show as PKN previewed AUSPACK 2022, which was to open its doors on 17-20 May at the Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Centre. This showcase of packaging and processing innovation proved a resounding success, with show owner APPMA announcing the evolution of AUSPACK into APPEX (see page 55), an all new event uniting the processing and packaging industry, to be staged at the MCEC from 12-15 March 2024.

7AMCOR LAUNCHES PAPER- BASED PACKAGING PLATFORM Amcor launched AmFiber, a new port-
folio of paper-based packaging products, designed to provide a high barrier from oxygen and moisture for dry food products. AmFiber’s introduction coin- cides with the four-year anniversary of Amcor’s 2025 sustainable packaging pledge.
8ASAHI SETS MAJOR NEW SUSTAINABILITY TARGETS
Asahi Beverages unveiled a new sus- tainability agenda, aiming to use its significant scale to create a more sus- tainable future for the ANZ region. The agenda introduced new targets (includ- ing for packaging), along with previously announced ones, all of which Asahi says will help to protect the planet, and build a more sustainable business.
9APCO AIMING TO DELIVER PFAS PHASE-OUT IN FOOD PACKS APCO began working with industry to deliver a phase-out of PFAS in fibre- based, food contact
packaging that is consistent with the objectives of the National PFAS Position Statement. APCO would go on to release a national PFAS action plan to support businesses to identify PFAS and to phase them out (see page 61).
10AMCOR LAUNCHES RECYCLE- READY PACKAGING SOLUTION Amcor introduced AmPrima PE Plus, a
high-barrier flexible film which Amcor says provides superior heat resistance, and is a more-sustainable alternative to standard metallised or foil-based structures.

Industry mourned the loss of one of the country’s leading innovators in pack- aging printing, Charles Hanna OAM, who grew the Hannapak business from humble beginnings into a national pow- erhouse printing carton packaging for a host of leading brands. It was sold five years ago to WestRock for $75m.

Australian plastics manufacturer Qenos has partnered with leading waste management company Cleanaway to undertake a joint feasibility study into plastic-to-plastic advanced recycling. The study will investigate the feasibility and environmental benefits of convert- ing Australia’s household soft plastic waste and mixed plastics into feedstock to produce circular polyethylene.
