While nobody
could have pre-
dicted the tumult
that 2020 would
bring, industry insid-
ers – such as James
Magee of OFS, Ange-
line Achariya of Sim-
plot, Pierre Pienaar of the WPO, and Mark Dingley of Matthews and the APPMA – predicted that supply-chain automation, digiti- sation, smart packaging, sustain- ability, and a shrinking workforce would be major trends over the next year and beyond.

Researchers at the University of New South Wales developed a way to turn banana plantation waste into biode- gradable and recyclable plastic. From banana pseudostem the researchers extracted cellulose, which can be used to make several different formats in food packaging.

ON THE COVER: Eco-
lean shows brand
owners how to
walk on the lighter
side in liquid
packaging. Against the backdrop of growing anti-plastic sentiment, there is a strong argument for using light- weight plastic packaging for bever- ages and liquid food products, espe- cially when taking a life-cycle view.
HMPS owner Mark Emmett bought Propac Industrial, the Sydney- based OEM that specialises in verti- cal form fill seal equipment. Propac Industrial was founded in 1992 by partners Craig Pullen and Kim McFadden; it now has more than 600 installations in Australia, New Zealand, the US, and other markets. Emmett said he planned to keep the manufacturing facility operating as usual and would retain all Propac Industrial employees. Emmett said when he was looking to grow HMPS, he struck on the idea of buying Pro- pac Industrial to grow both busi- nesses side by side.

Kilcullen-Law-

made the quest
for sustainable
packaging an integral part of her life’s work. She has served as the national president of the Austra- lian Institute of Packaging for the past three years.
The race to reach the 2025 National Packaging Targets had well and truly started, and APCO released the report
Australian Packag- ing Consumption and Resource Recov- ery Data, which foundthat35percent of all packaging in Australia has post- consumer recycled con- tent, but that only 16 per cent of plas- tic packaging in Australia was being
recycled or composted.
   Global liquid food packaging giant
Tetra Pak’s Index 2019: The Con- vergence of Health & Environment revealed that health and the envi- ronment are top consumer priori- ties. It found that two thirds of consumers believe we are reach- ing an environmental tipping point. Consumers see themselves as being directly responsible for the world around them and for their own health.
Smart packaging is ushering in a new age of possibility for con- nected, traceable, and enhanced packs. A roundup of some the lat- est smart packaging technology from around the world included new codes to replace QR codes, Coca-Cola Singapore’s limited- edition Star Wars-themed bottles featuring OLED light-up light- sabers, and smartphone-enabled packaging activations.
