Woolworths introduces sustainable tray
WOOLWORTHS has launched a recyclable paper meat tray across a selection of its Own Brand beef nationally.
The new paper trays used for Woolworths’ Specially Selected and Grass Fed beef ranges are the first step in a plan to make all Woolworths’ Own Brand red meat trays recy- clable over the coming months.
The redesign features a paper tray and fresh seal film, using 75 per cent less plastic than the previous packaging. Woolworths is to eliminate 2.2 tonnes of plastic from the sup- ply chain each year across
seven popular beef cuts. Consumers can recycle the trays in their kerbside recy- cling bin by peeling back the vacuum films used to seal in
the meat.
The film covering and lining
on the trays can also be recy- cled through the REDcycle bins located at every Woolworths store, along with any other household soft plastics.
Woolworths head of sustain- ability Adrian Cullen said the red meat line was the latest in the supermarket’s program to introduce more sustainable packaging across its products.
Vic to support waste reduction with grants
THE Victorian state government is supporting the state’s busi- nesses and organisations to reduce packaging waste while diverting more than 5500 tonnes of waste from landfill each year.
State minister for energy, environment and climate change Lily D’Ambrosio announced 17 Victorian organ- isations that will share in more than $560,000 through the Investment Support Grants – Packaging program to reduce
packaging waste in their busi- ness operations. Eligible organ- isations include SMEs, NFPs and social enterprises.
D’Ambrosio said Victoria’s recycling system was being overhauled and these grants are a small part of Victoria’s “recycling revolution”.
“We are helping businesses to reduce packaging, to give new life to our waste, and reduce the impact of dispos- able packaging on our environ- ment,” D’Ambrosio said.
