Pact, Fonterra partner on NZ’s first plant-based bottle
MARKING an industry first, New Zealand milk brand Anchor has launched a plant-based bottle manufactured by Pact Group for brand owner Fonterra.
The new milk bottle is con- verted from HDPE made from sustainably sourced sugarcane, a natural and renewable resource which captures carbon dioxide as it grows. According to Pact, the bottle is also 100 per cent kerb- side recyclable at the end of life.
The new Anchor Blue 2L Milk bottle packaging has been released into New Zealand’s North Island market as an addi- tional product in the existing Anchor range.
Pact Group executive general manager – Consumer and Industrial (NZ) Eric Kjestrup welcomed the packaging’s launch, which he said serves as an innovative step to uncover- ing alternative and sustainable packaging solutions.
Fonterra and Pact Group worked together to develop the new plant-based bottle.
“Fonterra’s appetite for innova- tion and commitment to sustain- able packaging has helped us pro- duce the iconic Anchor Blue 2L bottle in a plant-based resin which is not only fully recycla- ble, but also made from renew- able bio-matter,” Kjestrup said.
    Heavyweights launch recyclable retort pouch
GLOBAL packaging behemoth Amcor and food and drink pro- cessor Nestlé have launched a new flexible retort pouch that is recyclable in existing streams in Europe.
The new high-barrier pouch will first be used for Nestlé’s Felix brand wet cat food.
It uses Amcor’s AmLite HeatFlex Recyclable solution. It is made of polypropylene and can be recycled in existing plastic recy- cling streams in the Netherlands where this product is being launched as a pilot programme.
A statement from Amcor said the companies achieved a tech- nical breakthrough in solving
for the inability to recycle retort flexible packaging. The partners collaborated during the product development pro- cess, testing for heat resistance, machine performance, shelf- life and recyclability in the real world.
Amcor Flexibles EMEA presi- dent Michael Zacka said Amcor and Nestlé created a solution that for years was thought impossible.
“This high-barrier, high-heat resistant packaging can be eas- ily recycled within plastic recy- cling streams already existing in several European countries,” Zacka said.
