                Wide format: Materials
outdoor giant oOh! Media – said
the company had invested heavily
in developing an environmentally friendly printing option for Out of Home advertising, to reflect the demands of Australian advertisers to be more sustainable.
“There is an unmistakable need for greener Out of Home advertising solutions, and while in other international markets there are biodegradable products that are more environmentally friendly than PVC, these products were not viable for our market, due to quality, price or a mixture of both,” said Spicer.
“Our only option was to develop our own product, which delivers similar quality output, is able to withstand the Australian climate for the typical campaign cycle, and can be provided at a price point that is not excessively more than traditional PVC.
“Cactus Imaging is the first in the world to offer this 360 approach
to recycling in the Out of Home industry. It comes after many years of perfecting the production process, and looking for a secondary market that we could work with to give billboard skins a second life.”
The new SmartSkin product is now available for advertisers nationally, and costs only slightly more than traditional billboard skins.
Shark Skin
Ball & Doggett says it aims to change the outdoor display market, with the launch of its new Shark Skin Outdoor Display Board, which it says is both eco-friendly and able to perform in challenging environments, such as where moisture and humidity are present.
The Shark Skin is available in 1.2mm and 2mm thickness, can be digitally printed on both sides on a UV inkjet flatbed printer, and according to the company, has excellent converting capabilities.
It is manufactured from natural wood and fibre construction, making it a fully-recyclable substrate, which can be placed in any paper/cardboard recycling bin, allowing users to dispose of it responsibly.
According to the company, the encouragement to recycle and reuse waste material back into the supply chain and reduce landfill continues to be an important driver for business. It says it understands the future and survival of the planet is to focus on sustainable alternatives.
“Sustainability in print is becoming more important as individuals and businesses work to reduce their environmental footprint,” said Rob Brussolo, general manager – sign, display & digital, Ball & Doggett.

Kavalan
Spicers meanwhile is launching
a new PVC-free banner range, Kavalan, to address the growing environmental concerns over the use of PVC in wide-format printing.
Spicers says Kavalan is lightweight and has “superior environmental credentials”. Kavalan is “specifically designed for responsible end-of-life disposal, so it can be safely disposed of regardless of whether it is recycled, put into landfill or incinerated in waste-to- energy schemes”.
The company says that unlike any other product in the large format printing industry before it, Kavalan’s banner range is an alternative to PVC banner. It says Kavalan materials are changing the large-format digital print industry, paving the way for meeting zero PVC targets, while matching the physical qualities
and appearance of traditional PVC banner materials.
Wayne Hood, Spicers’ Sign & Display portfolio manager said: “Introducing the Kavalan range to our portfolio allows us to better align with our customers sustainable initiatives.
“We are constantly searching
the world for new products that
meet best practice standards in manufacturing, performance and sustainability. Kavalan is a perfect addition to our range, offering a non- PVC solution to our customers.”
Easy Dot
Industry supplier Starleaton is expanding its range of PVC-free media from German manufacturer Neschen, which includes a new version of Easy Dot PP for water- based inkjet and HP Indigo printers.
The sustainable range includes graphics media, wallpapers, laminates, and Easy Dot PET
L-UV, a 75-micron polyester film manufactured from 25 per cent post- consumer recycled (PCR) content.
Ines Eaton, marketing manager
at Starleaton, says the Neschen range of non-PVC digital print media is the eco-friendly alternative to standard PVC films. She says, “With no compromise on quality or longevity, they offer an attractive environmentally friendly status, along with a high-quality product suitable for various uses including long term indoor uses and short to mid-term outdoor applications.”
