                  FEATURE
MAKER OF THE YEAR & FURNITURE WINNER
Simeon Dux, Sham Tallboy, American walnut, poplar, brass.
What the judges said
• Simeon Dux had two pieces in contention for the Furniture prize, and one for Bowls & Boxes. His work is the right
mix of skill, design and identity, but it was the breadth and consistency of skill that has earned him the top gong. In design this piece dances between historical, midcentury and contemporary precedents in its language, but is able
to unite them all to create something that is pleasing to the contemporary eye while retaining the richness of its lineage.
The craftsmanship is precisely done without being showy, and works to support the design intent rather than being a design element itself. Moments of flourish in detail are clever but not overbearing, and the proportions give this piece a strong sense of presence and identity. – Adam Markowitz
Sustained excellence across all his entries makes Simeon Dux a very deserving winner. Closely following was Miles Gostelow, who also demonstrated a range of excellent work. Either of Simeon Dux’s major pieces were good enough to win

the Furniture category IMHO, but there was a lot of excellent competition. It was very difficult to choose between such a range of genres, styles and periods.– Robert Howard
This a beautifully resolved piece that showcases the
maker’s technical skills and design knowledge with restraint and sophistication. The references to Shaker, mid-century modern and Art Deco influences are clear but not overplayed. Congratulations Simeon on a beautiful piece.– Laura McCusker
Through the three pieces entered by Simeon is evident a desire to work to an incredibly high standard. From design through joinery to finish, his resolve and meticulous approach is obvious.
The exceptional quality of his finished work is undeniable.
A very worthy winner. Whilst giving a nod to different styles the lovely proportions, timber selection and final composition make for a well balanced, unique piece. Beautifully executed. – Bern Chandley
