                 BOWLS & BOXES – WINNER
David Haig, Rae’s Jewellery Box, carcase, rosewood; koa (lid); interior, sycamore and black velvet; details (escutcheon plate, key handle, stringing) ebony. Finish, oil/ varnish. Photos: David Allen
David Haig’s entry was beautifully presented via professional photography, and showcases both his very high level of technical skill and his very rare and refined aesthetic sense – an unbeatable combination. – Robert Howard
Bloody David Haig! Impeccably resolved, with details all considered with consideration for each other and in deference to a conceptual whole, such as the reducing spline depths in conversation with the tapering side profile. Details are done with virtuoso skill but have been employed without brashness and are not the defining element of the piece, but rather work in deference to the cohesiveness of the design and the subtle interplay of details. – Adam Markowitz
There is so much to this piece that at first glance looks deceptively simple. The quality of the making is obvious but the design is also exquisite with each proportion thoughtfully resolved. The curved lid contrasts beautifully with the crisp lines of the carcase, softening the form and asking to be touched. – Laura McCusker
