   Oil-free technology in data centres
DANFOSS HAS EXPANDED the capabilities for Turbocor compressors TTS and TGS with a higher saturated suction temperature (SST) op- erating range.
This has helped OEMs bring the benefits of oil-free technology to data centres operating at higher space temperatures.
Data centre cooling temperature require- ments have risen steadily in recent years, thanks to new server technology allowing them to oper- ate at higher space temperatures – giving opera- tors more flexibility to benefit from lower power, infrastructure, and operating costs. Now, Dan- foss is helping chiller OEMs meet this evolving need without sacrificing reliability and efficien- cy, by widening the operating range of its Turbo- cor compressors.
Available on TTS and TGS compressors de- signed for both air-cooled and water-cooled
chillers, the new high-SST option enable select Turbocor models to generate leaving water tem- peratures as high as 28°C, substantially reducing compressor load and power consumption.
The change enables OEMs to offer next-gener- ation operators all the benefits that have made Turbocor oil-free compressors such a successful choice for data centre chillers – such as efficien- cy, accuracy, and long-lasting reliability with no performance degradation over their service life.
Turbocor compressors can also restart quickly after a power outage and require a low start-up current – meaning they can better help to main- tain the set temperature in uncertain conditions, without putting strain on vital backup generators.
Strategic marketing manager for Turbocor, Eddie Rodriguez, said over the past decade the average set point for data centres has gone from under 10°C to 28°C and beyond.
“These higher ambient temperatures are providing data centre operators with substan- tial energy savings, and flexibility over their cooling design. But they can cause reliability problems if the compressor is not designed for the job,” Rodriguez said.
“Our new high-SST capabilities have widened the options available to chiller OEMs. Now, they are able to deliver the long-lasting performance, cost-efficiency and innovation necessary to keep pace with larger data centre footprints, operat- ing at higher temperatures—while keeping the Turbocor technology they know and trust.”
The newly-equipped Turbocor models are designed for use with A1 and A2L low-GWP refrigerants R134a, R515B, R513A, and R1234ze. ✺
