Cover Story
Press manufacturing giant Heidelberg is launching new offset presses — the CX 92, CX 104, and the Speedmaster SX 102 are available — which it says offer high levels of output, with cost savings.
Last June Heidelberg launched the new CX
104 and CX 92 special format option 92 machine platform, this was in
addition to the latest Speedmaster SX102-P model 2020 generation.
At the time of writing more than 1300 printing units of the new generation of Speedmaster CX 104
/ CX 92 have already been sold and shipped to customers globally. The new CX 104 has also gained ground in Australia with the first machine now installed in Queensland, and the second about to be installed Victoria, both with the latest Heidelberg Push to Stop features.
The Speedmaster CX 92 is the latest in Heidelberg’s press portfolio. The format allows eight-up printing but with a smaller plate, smaller press, and lower energy than a B1 size.
Savas Mystakidis, managing director of Heidelberg ANZ says, “We are excited to see these new models become available. They fill a space for a number of our customers who have been wanting to realise the cost savings that can be achieved when you print on the 92cm format.
“The added benefit is that the level of technology and configurations that are available on the 92/102 means that our customers are able to maintain
the high levels of output, whilst being able to configure the press to suit the market and product demands.”
Increase lifespan
Douglas Mooney, regional business manager, Heidelberg Asia Pacific, says, “We took a decision to launch our new 92 format class based on the known CX 104 platform. This means we retain the known durability and quality of the 104, which increases the life span.”
Heidelberg says print businesses can save up to 20 per cent on plate costs with the 920 format.
It says that with the CX 92 format size, the potential plate savings for the common eight-up commercial print A4 signature allows for this level of plate cost saving, compared to the standard 70x100cm plate format size.

The new platform allows for a host of technology features. All options are available, such as the Heidelberg Push to Stop package, which allows an autonomous production and
job change, through the patented Intellistart 3 software.
Options such as full colour and register control with Inpress control, and LED UV drying allow for the fast turnaround demands of commercial printers, and full UV options, automated coating units and Foilstar cold foil allow users “to apply the most dazzling effects”, according to Heidelberg, on the printed sheet.
control software through the
Prinect Press Center console and the Intelliline system, the operation of the press is simplified with minimal manual intervention required. Special equipment such as the Cutstar roll sheeter are optionally available.
To coincide with the market launch of the Speedmaster CX 104, Heidelberg is also unveiling the new model Speedmaster CX 92. Like the Speedmaster CX 104, it benefits from a new, ergonomic design, the newly designed coating unit, and the innovations in the inking/ dampening unit.
This model, too, comes with the new Press Center generation, and Intellistart 3 as standard, with even the basic version offering a high level of flexibility and productivity.
With the launch of Prinect Inpress Control 3 and Intelliline for the Speedmaster CX 92, autonomous printing based on the Push to Stop philosophy is now possible for the first time – a step forward compared with the previous model.
In addition to the cost-efficiency achieved by using 20 per cent less printing plate material, process efficiency is also improved thanks to faster makeready and a reduction in waste. Heidelberg says that makes the Speedmaster CX 92, “the ideal press to meet the challenges associated with shorter runs” in the commercial print market, and even for some specialty packaging production.
Smart Printshop
The Smart Printshop concept is technology for digitalisation of
the printing process. The new Speedmaster range CX 104/92, and
“The level of technology and the configurations that are available on the 92/102 means that our customers are able to maintain the high levels of output, whilst being able to configure the press to suit the market and product demands.”

The Speedmaster SX 102 is described by Heidelberg as a highly automated printing press, designed to achieve cost effective production in commercial segment.
Heidelberg says both 102
and 92 platforms can be fully equipped with the highest automation features, “enabling high productivity levels with no quality compromise”, as the 92 is based on the larger 102 platform.
The company says that with the new ergonomic design, intelligent
