“With a long-term view to building AIC, Airbus contin- ues to bring more workshare into Australia. Our AIC spend is increasing, and we plan to do more in Australia, with our local partners, including exporting their capabilities into the global Airbus supply chain.”
SMES
NIOA takes out the top spot for both the Top 20 SME and ANZ SME lists and a ranking of No. 26 in the Top 40 with their $121.96 million in turnover. The company has doubled their turnover since 2017. NIOA has been expanding rap- idly this year with joint ventures with Rheinmetall and new manufacturing facilities in both Queensland and Victoria.
“NIOA’s growth is reflective of getting the basics right and listening to our clients and stakeholders,” Rob Nioa, Managing Director of NIOA said to ADM. “This starts at the war fighter through to CASG, the Service Headquar- ters and finally Government and the policy outcomes they seek to achieve. We have partnered with some of the lead- ing technology providers in the US and Europe and worked hard to gain their commitment to Australian sovereignty and exports.
“We also have our CASG client to thank for the trust they have placed in an Australian Prime Contractor; our part- nership with Defence has allowed best-of-breed capabilities to be delivered to our war fighters,” Nioa concluded.
And for the first time ADM is proud to announce that we have more than 20 ANZ SMEs on the list! Jumping from $505.86 million in turnover last year up to $759.83, the 50.2 per cent jump is heartening to see along with seven new companies in the mix.
We also have a number of notable new companies across all the lists and a few absences. See box 1 for more on those in detail.
MOVERS AND SHAKERS
In terms of newcomers, some have made the move from adjacent civil industries while other private companies have taken the leap into Top 40 for the first time.
“Sydney City Marine (SCM - a debut in the ANZ SME Top 20 at No. 16) has successfully traded throughout the COVID-19 pandemic mainly due to the requirement to provide ongoing and essential repair and maintenance ser- vices to Defence and Commercial maritime assets and of course, good management,” Warren Levin, SCM Director, Commercial & Defence said to ADM. “In order to further insulate ourselves during this difficult time SCM divided the staff into two non-overlapping shifts. The morning shift started at 0500 and would go through until 1200, whereby deep cleaning occurred, then the afternoon shift com- menced at 1300 and went through until 2100, again, fol- lowed by another deep clean.
“If someone contracted the virus, then that shift would have been isolated and the other shift continue to operate the business as normal as possible.
“We found this operating method to be extremely effec- tive which resulted in no cases at all and allowed SCM to provide the essential services to our Defence and commer- cial clients.
