help maintain physical health, productivity, social connections, and happiness) and is targeting a 5-star NABERS energy rating.
Nine leveraged the collaborative opportunity of having key teams being under the same roof for the first time by building an internal staircase that connects low-rise and mid-rise floors. The philosophy was to promote better wellbeing by giving people more open space and the ability to walk throughout the entire tenancy, as well as provide greater potential for “incidental” conversations and connections between dif- ferent team members.
The Nine Sydney workplace provides a choice of working and meeting places, each conducive to the type of task they’re doing. Each standard floorplate includes quiet spaces and quiet rooms, sit-to-stand desks arranged in team neighbourhoods, as well as large meeting rooms with VC capability and spacious breakout spaces.
There are also a number of specially designed studios, multipurpose spaces and an outdoor terrace area that can be used for creative work such as photo shoots, filming TV segments/live crosses/ cooking segments, etc. These physical spaces were designed in conjunction with staff to ensure their specific needs are met and that they are able to work to their very best abilities in the new space. For example, the industry leading “hub and spoke” model of the television newsroom, the hair and makeup facility built with cushioned flooring for ergonomic reasons, specially installed whiteboards for product and technology teams, and employees being able to vote on the types of sit-to-stand desks and chairs to use in the building.
Some of the key benefits according to Nine staff:
The large floorplate, floor-to-ceiling windows and high ceilings, which provide a light and airy feeling, and has made physical distancing much easier throughout COVID-19.
Access to wellbeing services such as end-of-trip facilities and the Nest facility. These promote a greater work-life balance, giving people the opportunity to step away and recharge with a focus on workplace health and safety.
“Nine’s original location in Willoughby had sentimental and historic value in spades, but was
no longer fit for purpose for our modern and diverse media company.”
