The defence sector in WA comprises approximately 4,300 full-time De- fence personnel and 1,700 reservists, supported by approximately 3,000 first-tier prime contractor indus- try people. Defence directly spends around A$800 million per annum in WA on goods and services provided by WA companies. A significant fea- ture of the defence industry sector in WA involves the through-life sup- port, repair and upgrade of the Collins
Class submarines and AnzacFrigates, home-ported at Fleet Base West. WA industry also has a substantial ship- building industry that has been ac- tive in naval shipbuilding projects, for both civil and defence markets.

KPMG estimates the current total economic contribution of the defence industry to the ACT economy and sur- rounding region is $4.3 billion in GSP
