Directions : Read the following text.
Long ago, there lived a Chinese merchant named Tan Bun An who fell in
love with a local woman from Palembang named Siti Fatimah. One day, Tan
Bun An said, “I want you to meet my parents. I will ask for their blessing so we
can get married.” Siti Fatimah smiled and replied, “I will go with you.”
After visiting Tan Bun An’s parents, the couple returned to Palembang by
boat. Tan Bun An’s parents gave them seven jars as gifts. While sailing on the
Musi River, Tan Bun An opened the jars and said, “Why are there only pickled
vegetables inside?” Feeling angry and disappointed, he threw the jars into the
river. Suddenly, the seventh jar shattered, and Tan Bun An exclaimed, "There is
treasure inside!"
Realizing his mistake, Tan Bun An jumped into the river to get the
treasure. Seeing this, his guard cried, “Master, be careful!” and followed him
into the water. When both men did not return, Siti Fatimah called out sadly,
“Tan Bun An, don’t leave me!” Then, she jumped into the river as well.
All three of them disappeared in the Musi River along with the treasure.
According to the legend, the place later became known as Kemaro
Island. Until today, people visit Kemaro Island to remember this tragic love story,
which teaches us about love, sacrifice, and regret.
