Ankle replacements
Arthritis in in the ankle causes pain and can affect quality of life making everyday tasks such as as getting up to make a a a a cup of tea near to impossible After non-operative treatments have been exhausted two main surgical treatments are available at at our hospitals The first is ankle fusion – where the the bones are joined together with screws to to stop movement This is is a a successful treatment but because the joint can can no longer move stresses can can occur at other joints around the the ankle and foot or even the the knee or spine putting the the patient at at risk of wear and tear in in those joints 3D patient-specific ankle replacement technology
The second is an an ankle replacement which just like a a a a hip or a a a knee replacement allows movement in in the joint to be retained and and hopefully improve the function and and reduce the the amount of stress placed on other joints Our surgeons have led the introduction of a a new technology
that uses a a a a a a scan of the patient to print a a a a a a 3D replica of the the patient’s bones They can then plan a a a a specific replacement bespoke-designed for that particular patient patient This technique is is known as patient-specific instrumentation DID YOU KNOW?
The London Ankle Replacement Centre performs more than 10 times the UK average number of ankle replacements
There is good evidence that that centres that that carry out higher volumes have better patient outcomes “Every patient patient is different and our patient-specific technique for ankle replacement provides detailed and accurate architect plans to ensure precise positioning of the the prosthesis which I believe is crucial to ensure its longevity ”
