ABSTRACT

Pontoon bridges are not just a folkloristic curiosity or a military device, but they represent an
effective and economical solution for crossing large stretches of deep water. The length of

these bridges is not limited by structural or technological problems and some of them extend
over more than 3000 m. In this paper, after a brief excursus on floating and pontoon bridge in

Italy and abroad, the main components of this structure are described and a guidance for

structural modelling and design is provided. Hints are also given to possible future
developments that could allow this technology to be a valid alternative to traditional bridges,

even with heavy and intense traffic.
