Zoom is a web-based platform that many faculty
are using for teleconferencing and distance education, and that our institution is using for business conferencing and project development.
But remote video conferencing can take a toll on our physical wellness and engagement. Here’s why:
- Screen freezing
- Echoes and disruptive noises in the background
- Harder to process non-verbal cues
(facial expression, voice tone, body language)
- Delays and silence
(after 1.2 seconds, attendees perceive a less friendly environment)
- Concerns with voyeurism / exhibitionism and privacy violations
- The home sanctuary has now been infiltrated by work and working
associates
- Multiple time zones and multiple family members sharing Internet
bandwidth may make cool features like screen sharing, video watching, etc., impossible
