Young Adult Life
Terrel: Right after graduating, Bick wanted to join the army
and suggested I join too so that we could go together on the
buddy system. In June, I signed up for two years of active duty,
two years of active reserves, and two years of inactive reserves.
Bick and I went to New Orleans together for processing.
Next, we underwent basic training at Fort Chaffee in Arkansas.
Following basic training, Bick and I separated, each training in our
own area of expertise. I was sent to Aberdeen Proving Grounds
in Maryland to train to join the ordinance branch and support
missiles—primarily the Corporal missile.

land, I moved to Fort Benning,
Georgia. Many of my buddies
at Fort Benning signed up to go
to Europe, and although I never
signed up, I received orders to go
to Germany.
I spent 1957 and 1958 in the
Frankfurt area of Germany in a
small town called Gonsenheim,
