JulieTTe: Right away, Terrel and I went steady. He would
spend weekends in New Orleans at my friends’ and my apart-
ment. We would go to movies, host parties, or go to dinner. Al-
though I was only twenty-one, and he was only twenty-two, we
had both dated a lot of people and knew what we wanted. He
was everything I wanted in a husband: religious, handsome, intel-
ligent, understanding, kind, and a gentleman.
Terrel: I fell in love with Juliette right away and knew I wanted
to spend the rest of my life with her. We had the same Catholic
faith and enjoyed dancing and having fun together. After about
three months of dating, I talked with her parents about us getting
married. Once I had their blessing, I bought a ring Juliette had
picked out from Armentor’s Jewelers in New Iberia and made a
weekend trip to visit her. When her friends left the apartment and
we were alone, I asked her to marry me.
JulieTTe: In early November of 1960, I accepted a job as a
private duty nurse in Loreauville and moved back home with my
parents. I found my wedding dress at Le Parisienne’s in Lafayette.
Terrel and I continued to enjoy going out to dinner or movies.
We got married on January 21, 1961 at 10 a.m. at St. Joseph
Catholic Church. My Hotel Dieu roommate Yvonne “Brownie”
Bernos, sister Linda, and childhood friend Gwen “Poopay”
Dubre walked in the wedding along with Terrel’s brother Russel,
his cousin James “Boo” Richard, and his friend Loto Louviere.
We had a small reception in the church hall, followed by a big-
ger party at my parents’ house. About three-hundred people min-
gled, ate, and drank. After the receptions, we left to honeymoon
