Welcome

On behalf of the Organizing Committee, it is our distinct pleasure to welcome you to Minneapolis, Minneso-
ta for the ASME 2016 Dynamic Systems and Control Conference being held at the Hyatt Regency Hotel,
               October 12-14, 2016.
The technical program of DSCC 2016 maintains the strong tradition of quality set by previous conferences.
We are privileged to undertake the task of organizing this flagship ASME conference for the Dynamic
Systems and Controls Division of ASME. This year’s DSCD conference is comprised of more than 200
               technical papers.

A new feature of this year’s DSCC will be a student poster show held during the welcoming reception on
Tuesday, October 11, from 6:30-9:00 PM. The reception will be jointly hosted by DSCC and the Fluid Power
Innovation and Research Conference, FPIRC 2016.
The conference features three keynote presentations at the start of each day. On the first day, we will hear
“Via Negativa,” by Dr. Peter Achten of Innas, an innovative mechanical engineering company in the
Netherlands. On the second day, Prof. Mark Spong, Dean Engineering at the University of Texas at Dallas,
will present the Nyquist Lecture, “A Brief History of Passivity-Based Control in Robotics.” On the third day,
Dr. Datta Godbole, VP of Engineering and Chief Technology Officer of Honeywell Building Solutions, will
present “Smart Homes & Buildings - Connected People in a Digital Environment.” At the conference
banquet and award ceremony, Prof. Jean-Jacques Slotine of Massachusetts Institute of Technology will
present the Rufus Oldenburger Lecture, “Collective Computation in Nonlinear Networks and the Grammar
               of Evolvability.”
A high quality conference of this size could not have been possible without the tireless and selfless
contributions by the enthusiastic and energetic volunteers of our community, aided by the productive
ASME staff. We recognize the members of the Organizing Committee: James Van de Ven, Publications
               Chair; Nima Mahmoodi, Workshops and Special Sessions Chair; Perry Li, Finance and Registration Chair;
Lei Zuo, Exhibits and Industry Chair; Xu Chen, Students and Young Members Chair; and Fen Wu, DSCD
Editorial Board Chair. We are grateful to all the TC Chairs and members as well as to the Associate Editors
of the Conference Editorial Board for their valuable assistance, and to ASME staff members, Erin Dolan and
               Laraine Lee.
Of course, this conference and all other activities of DSCD are possible because of the volunteer effort of
the DSCD Executive Committee. We thank the Executive Committee for their leadership and support. Kim Stelson, General Chair,
Finally, we thank the ASME DSCD members, especially those who attended this conference for helping University of Minnesota
make this conference a success. We wish you an enjoyable and productive experience at DSCC 2016.
