Chair’s Welcome Message

On behalf of the Information Storage and Processing Systems (ISPS) Executive Committee, it
is our pleasure to welcome you to the 2017 ASME ISPS Conference.

More than two decades ago the first ISPS conference was held in 1991 and nowadays it
provides a forum for international researchers from the academia and industries to share their
findings, to network, and to foster collaboration opportunities in technical and business areas.
The conference also intends to attract and groom graduate students in the ISPS technical
areas and related industries.

This year the ISPS conference is collocated with the InterPACK Conference in San Francisco.
The 2017 ISPS Conference attracted 53 top quality contributions from all over the world
presented in 12 breakout sessions that cover ISPS technical disciplines and the new data
storage trends in tribology, head/media interface, actuator/suspension and sensors, servo
control technology, mechatronics, robotics and automation, imaging/printing technologies
and consumer electronics, optical storage and future technologies, flexible media mechanics
and tape storage.

The conference features two keynote speeches and one distinguished talk. At noon of the
first day, we are pleased to have a keynote speech by Dr. Mark Re, CTO and SVP R&D
Seagate Technology, on “Data Storage at the Edge and Beyond”. At the ISPS banquet, the
ISPS 2017 distinguished speaker Dr. Andrei Khurshudov, Chief Data Officer, Alchemy IoT, will
deliver a distinguished talk on “A Short Introduction to Big Data Analytics, the Internet of
Things, and their Synergies”. Lastly, on the second day, we will enjoy the joint keynote
speech from Dr. Michael Liehr, CEO AIM Photonics on “Challenges to Integrated Photonics
Manufacturing.”

We would like to acknowledge invaluable help from the ASME staff and collaboration with the
InterPACK Executive committee to make ISPS 2017 possible. I would like to personally
acknowledge on behalf of the ISPS EC all volunteers who have taken time from their busy
schedules to recruit top speakers, solicit and review papers and help with awards.

At the end, we would like to thank all participants of the conference and hope that you will Andrey Ovcharenko, PhD
