An unpublished speech by Bialik on the unique nature
                      of hebrew drama

                                Ziva Shamir

Prior to Bialik's emigration from the Soviet Union in 1912, he delivered a
solemn speech which was meant to encourage the Ha'bimah theatrical company
to perform in Hebrew only and to leave Europe forever. He argued that the
rebirth of the Hebrew language must be accompanied by new dramatic
achievements, since Hebrew is a perfect language for the stage. Biblical Hebrew,
explained Bialik, is a language without any detailed descriptions. It is based on
pathos and on continuous actions, with no delaying factors. It is not based on
regular tenses, but rather on modals, and it has no present at all. As a result of its
unique nature, he believed that drama will eventually thrive in the Promised
Land and that Ha'bimah will contribute to a great extent to this unprecedented
Renaissance. This is a first publication of Bialik's speech.
