Cambridge Curriculum Links for P5 Students


          1700-1918 • Society and Culture - Development Under the Crown

            SS.P5.C2a I, II, III        Friendly Societies: Field trip to Verdmont includes a tour of the   Verdmont
                                        house and talk about Emancipation and the period after Eman-
            Politics and Law:           cipation. The legacy of the Somers Pride of India Lodge founder
            Emancipation 1834 and       Joseph Henry Thomas will be introduced. Thomas played a
            changing status of black    leading role in education and in establishing Friendly Societies.

                                        Role play skit will help students to understand the political and
                                        social situation of the time.

            SS.P5.C2a I, II, III        The story of the brig Enterprise (February, 1835) is brought to   Verdmont
                                        life in a field trip to Verdmont. The collections in this historic
            Politics and Law:           house feature the fine works of black carpenters and furniture
            Emancipation 1834 and       makers in Bermuda, including  John Henry Jackson’s bird’s eye

                                        names, origin and professions.

                                        Learn about African and native American culture in Bermuda
                                        including Gombey dancing.

            SS.P5E3a II                 Field trips at BNT sites with a focus on ship building, whaling and   Waterville
                                        piloting. Students will learn about black pilot James ‘Jemmy’
            Economy & Technology –      Darrell in a partner skit ‘Meet Pilot Jemmy Darrell’.
