Character Sketch of James:
Book: James and the Giant Peach
Name of the character: James Henry Trotter
Physical description: James is a sweet, kind, smart, and curious boy unlike his cruel,
selfish and greedy aunts: Aunt Sponge and Aunt Spiker. What is the problem in the
story and how did he solve it? One of the main problems in the story was when the
Peach was being attacked by sharks and James, along with the other creatures
solved the problem by tethering seagulls onto the Peach to make it float, thus saving
them from being eaten.
Character traits: James is a lonely child in the beginning as his parents were killed
by a rhinoceros. The idea of having friends or someone that could understand or
take care of him were alien ideas to him. James shows kindness toward others as
he cared for everyone while they were on the peach. He becomes the leader of his
group by getting ideas quickly to save the peach and its passengers and by being
caring toward his new friends and being fair to everyone. He is also a peacemaker,
stopping any of Centipede and Earthworm’s frequent arguments throughout the
book.
