UNIVERSITY PLACEMENT AND GUIDANCE
University Placement
Enrollment at the Junior College is intentionally small, and all students are in their pre-university year, so students derive a particular energy and focus from within this university-bound community. Many factors are at play to ensure that students have the university placement advice and support that they require while at NJC, the foundation of which is a structured university placement program. The program has a concentration on research, program requirements, preparation, choice, admission procedures and deadlines, and applications for scholarships.
Students benefit from ongoing counselling from NJC’s experienced Director of University Guidance, commencing with course selection advice in the spring prior to departure followed by one-on-one consultations and group meetings while at NJC. It is also the tradition that in early October students travel to Geneva to take part in an evening University Orientation event hosted by the Council of International Schools (CIS). Representatives from 100 notable universities exhibit at this event, admittedly drawn from across the globe to Switzerland by top students and one of the largest concentrations of prestigious international high schools in the world. Additionally, university representatives from Canada, the US and abroad visit NJC’s campus while on their European tour to present directly to our students.
In the spring prior to departure, enrolled students will be scheduled for a consultation with the Director of University Guidance and will also receive a comprehensive University Placement package from NJC. Students will be encouraged—as most Grade 11 students are—to conduct preliminary research to narrow their university and program choices. Since no amount of research can replace how a campus feels, NJC also suggests that students visit preferred universities pre-departure for NJC to get a personal sense of the university communities.

NJC is an official test centre for select SAT tests. Most colleges today accept either the SAT or ACT and state that they do not have a preference. It is not unusual for a student to score significantly higher on one test versus the other.
Keep in mind the differences in structure and content of the two exams. Note that recent changes to the SAT format have resulted in it now being very similar to the format of the ACT, with the exception that the ACT offers a science portion (favouring students who plan on studying in the science faculties at the university level). To make an educated choice, check out some of the free full-length practice tests for the ACT and SAT online. Familiarize yourself with the format, content and structure, and decide what is best for you. Taking the pre-tests (PSAT and PLAN) is recommended if they are offered in your area.
Students looking for assistance in preparing for the SAT or ACT have many options available. From individual study guides to organized classes and online support, students are encouraged to choose the options that best suit their learning style.
