UNIVERSITY PLACEMENT and GUIDANCE continued
The Common Application
When considering an application to US colleges, it is advisable for students to create an account in the Common Application in the summer prior to coming to NJC. The website is: https://www.commonapp.org/how-apply. Here, students can create an account to familiarize themselves with the layout of this holistic application system that includes well over 500 colleges. The Common Application will purge all of its files in August of each year, so be advised that the information you input will not be saved.
British Universities
If you are considering direct entry medicine, dentistry or veterinary studies, you should register for the required standardized tests before you arrive at NJC.
1. Check the website of “University League Tables and Ranking” to help you come up with a list of possible universities. Use http://www.thecompleteuniversityguide.co.uk/ and then click on the subject of your choice. The universities that offer that subject will be listed.
2. Choose a few to see what requirements they have. Often Medical or Veterinary programs want the BMAT (schools vary as to which date you must take this exam) or UKCAT. Review the requirements carefully to determine which exam you should register for.
3. Students should spend time using the UCAS system (http://www.ucas.com) to help in choosing programs and schools, as there are over 50,000 different programs from which to choose.
4. Consider the Atlantic Bridge Program - Medical school in Ireland ( http://www.atlanticbridge.com/application-instructions )
Programs at Oxford and Cambridge and other UK universities also sometimes have standardized test requirements, for example LNAT for law, Physics Aptitude Test (PAT), or the Thinking Skills Assessment (TSA) for entry into economics, psychology, and other undergrad subjects, to name a few.
The deadline for the direct entry meds, dentistry and vet meds programs—and for Oxford or Cambridge (applicants cannot apply to both of these schools – you must choose one)—is October 15th each year.
Guidance Services
The Director of University Guidance provides careful attention to the needs of each individual student. Traditional guidance services are also available to students in the following areas.
Academic Counselling | Course selection, study skills, time management
● Psychological Educational Assessments
Students with identified learning disabilities should have a recent Psycho-Educational assessment that has been completed within the past three years. NJC will review the recommended accommodations and provide what is possible in NJC’s setting with the available resources. The most common accommodations include extra time on tests/exams, quiet workspaces, and use of technology for writing tasks. Universities will require that all Psych-Ed assessments be on file and recent (within the three-year window) if accommodations are to be requested at the post-secondary level. Any previous IPRC or IEP documents will be requested by NJC along with a copy of the original Psych-Ed assessment, so that they are included in the student’s OSR (Ontario Student Record).
