instructors to focus attention on those students who may need
extra help and practice. All Small Scrawl activities and Writing
Assignments as well as the final activity in each grammar chapter
can be completed in the MyWritingLab book-specific module.
Each chapter is now preceded by new learning objectives to help
students and instructors alike see what the chapter is intended to
accomplish before they begin work in it. Each objective is keyed to
the appropriate section of that chapter. A Learning Objectives
Review at the end of each chapter in Part 1 provides an easy-
to-read summary.
Chapters 8 , 9 , and 10 , the chapters on methods, have a
new feature. Each chapter now opens not only with a professional
essay, but with a short, accessible poem. Conciseness and
precision, so characteristic of poetry, are also desirable in essays,
and making poetry a part of students’ universe now will help to
prepare them for higher-level courses.
Chapters 8 , 9 , and 10 also contain a few new essays
written by students. These essays model authentic student voices
and occasionally break the five-paragraph mold.
Chapter 11 , Writing a Research Paper, now incorporates
material on writing summary reports. It also includes a new,
argument-based student research paper.
Part III , Readings, has been updated with three essays, two
poems, and a short story. The decision to include literature in the
Readings anticipates college courses that incorporate both writing
and literature.
There is little throughout the sixth edition that has not been re-
examined and revised, and many new images and exercises have
