instructors to focus attention on those students who may need
extra help and practice. All Small Scrawl activities and Writing

Assignments as well as the final activity in each grammar chapter

can be completed in the MyWritingLab book-specific module.

Each chapter is now preceded by new learning objectives to help

students and instructors alike see what the chapter is intended to

accomplish before they begin work in it. Each objective is keyed to
the appropriate section of that chapter. A Learning Objectives

Review at the end of each chapter in Part 1 provides an easy-

                    Chapters 8 , 9 , and 10 , the chapters on methods, have a

new feature. Each chapter now opens not only with a professional

essay, but with a short, accessible poem. Conciseness and
precision, so characteristic of poetry, are also desirable in essays,

                    prepare them for higher-level courses.

                    Chapters 8 , 9 , and 10 also contain a few new essays

written by students. These essays model authentic student voices
and occasionally break the five-paragraph mold.

Chapter 11 , Writing a Research Paper, now incorporates

material on writing summary reports. It also includes a new,

                    argument-based student research paper.

Part III , Readings, has been updated with three essays, two
poems, and a short story. The decision to include literature in the

Readings anticipates college courses that incorporate both writing

                    and literature.

There is little throughout the sixth edition that has not been re-
