The truth is that all writers revise—even Thomas Jefferson. No
—make that especially Thomas Jefferson. After all, when
you’re doing something as important as building a country, you
are not going to rely on the first thing that pops out of your
head. The more important the document, the more important it
is to think through it and revise it multiple times.
Reflect on It
Think about something that you do that requires revision,
checking and double-checking, or attention to format. For
example, you might “revise” an outfit before going out for an
important interview. You might “proofread” your appearance in
a mirror before you step into the interviewer’s office. As you
shake the interviewer’s hand, it might boost your confidence to
notice that your formatting is just right: She is wearing a gray
suit, too. What else in your life requires revision, proofreading,
or formatting?
