Semicolon and Joining Word

Another method of coordination is using a semicolon and a joining

word. As with a comma and FANBOYS conjunction, a complete

sentence (an independent clause) will appear on both sides of the

               semicolon.

                    Independent clause; therefore, independent clause.

Example of Sentences Connected with a

                    Semicolon and a Joining Word

Shakira thought she would have money left over at the end of

                    the month.

She did not anticipate having to buy a new tire.

The two separate sentences can be combined with a semicolon and a

               joining word.

Shakira thought she would have money left over at the end of

the month; however, she did not anticipate having to buy a new
                    tire.

The joining words also function as transitional expressions,

underscoring the relationship between the two clauses.
