Aside from configuring the private cloud infrastructure, or fabric,
resource use must be monitored continuously to ensure proper resource
distribution and control. You can think of a cloud fabric as the collective
networking, storage, and processing capabilities available to cloud
consumers.
For example, you might monitor virtual server usage for chargeback to a
specific business unit. Products such as VMware’s vCenter Chargeback and
Microsoft’s System Center 2012 SP1 Service Manager allow metering of
cloud resources based on consumption. These tools can be used for both
public and private clouds.
The operative phrase to watch for on the exam is “exclusive use.”
Questions using this phrase are most likely referring to a private cloud
solution.
Public Clouds
Where private clouds are for exclusive use by a single business, public
clouds offer computing services to anybody who has an Internet connection.
For example, Internet users might subscribe to the Dropbox file-hosting
service for cloud file storage.
Public clouds do not give consumers control of computing resources.
Private clouds are characterized by exclusive use of resources by a single
organization on a private network; public clouds do not offer a private
network for each customer.
Hybrid Clouds
Hybrid clouds are a combination of private and public clouds. For example,
consider an organization using its local user accounts to authenticate to
multiple public cloud services such as cloud email and cloud storage. The
key phrase to remember about hybrid clouds is “multiple providers.”
It is sometimes difficult to distinguish between private,
