What is the Chicago City Council?
The City of Chicago is divided into fifty legislative districts called “Wards.”
Each Ward is represented by an Alderman who is elected by their constituency to
serve a four year term.
In addition to representing the interests of their ward residents, together the fifty
(50) aldermen form the Chicago City Council, which serves as the legislative
branch of government of the City of Chicago.
What Does An Alderman Do?
An Alderman introduces, co-sponsor, votes on legislation (ordinances) proposed in

They also serve on standing committees that work with individual departments on
the execution of city activities, and review proposed ordinances, resolutions and
orders before they are voted on by the full council.
What assistance can be provided
at the 9th Ward Service Office?
The 9th Ward Service Office serves as a
satellite city hall, connecting constituents with
city services and programs and directing city
resources to address the issues impacting the
quality of life for our communities and neighborhoods. The 9thWard staff serves
as a direct liaison with city departments to ensure timely and effective delivery of
service needs and fulfilling of over approximately 15,000 individual residential
service requests a year.
The 9th Ward staff also assists constituents with services such as foreclosure
counselling, employment assistance, home infrastructure grants, representing the
Alderman at community events, and working with a variety of block clubs and
community groups to address issues of concern.
It is our mission to provide guidance and assistance that is
exemplary and efficient. As residents, business owners and
visitors of the 9th Ward, you are entitled to first class treatment.
