6 GRADE COURSE DESCRIPTIONS
Visual Art 1 (Semester)
Visual Art 1 is designed to develop confidence and facility in foundational artistic skills, regardless of the students’ previous training or
artistic ability. Students refine techniques used to create a variety of two-dimensional artworks through developing skills in drawing and
painting, while also using various techniques and mediums to create 3-D artwork. Composition, technique, the elements and principles of
design, and attention to process are explored. The student artist develops perceptual, creative, technical and problem-solving skills as they
design and produce works of art with personal expression.

Learning Pathways (Semester – required in 6 grade)
This course provides students with the opportunity to engage in strength/interest identification and career exploration. Through focused
projects and activities students will investigate and apply workplace skills, align strengths and interests with college and career pathways,
and develop a personalized career and education plan including both short- and long-term goals. This course provides an opportunity to
earn one digital tool certificate. This course is required for all middle school students.
Introduction to Gaming & Programming (Semester)
In this hands-on course, students will apply the basic principles and processes of game design and object-oriented programming to the
development of their own games. Throughout this process we will incorporate several game design programs to help students learn by
playing. This course provides an opportunity to earn one digital tool certificate.
Robotics (Semester)
This is a hands-on program that uses challenges based on real world scientific problems to engage students in research, problem-solving
and engineering. Working in teams, students build and program LEGO robots to complete very challenging missions on an obstacle course.
Students can participate in competitions outside of class.
