The crowd exploded as Stewart stole the lead in the first lap of his heat. It was obvious that Stewart was pushing his bike to the edge as he blasted through the track. He would swap places with Mike Alessi before taking the lead back from him. By the halfway point, Stewart had some company as Eli Tomac began to make moves for the lead. Stewart would strategi- cally block Tomac as they got closer to the finish flag. But
in the final laps Tomac would steal the leading position; as the finish flag waved, Stewart would edge Ken Roczen out by tire tread – earning his ticket to the main event.
