CARSONMUMFORD Loretta Lynn Amateur National Motocross Champion
It’s always a big step moving from the Supermini class to the B class as the bigger bike requires a different riding style, offers significantly more power at the twist of the throttle, and the competition gets deeper and more experienced. Carson Mum- ford is no stranger to a challenge and he’s certainly no stranger to the spotlight as the Californian has earned gold countless times at the Loretta Lynn Dude Ranch, winning a total of two number one plates in the process. Although the four-stroke motor of the CRF150R that he was competing on in the Supermini class assisted him in his transition to the big bike, Mumford is still one of the shortest riders com- peting in the B class at this time, providing him with a different challenge to over- come on the race track. His size has never slowed him down before, as a matter of fact it could’ve favored him in the mini ranks, but there are certain nuances to riding the bigger bike that are a little bit more difficult for a shorter rider. Nonethe- less, the Californian’s AMSOIL | Factory Connection | Honda is an absolute rocket out of the gate and the starting gate is one area of the track where Mumford’s stature still puts him at an advantage. He was hunting down a title in the 250 B Limited class at the Loretta Lynn Amateur National Motocross Championship and he made his intentions known at the gate drop of the very first moto, blasting out of the gate to an exceptionally timed holeshot from the outside of the dog house. The Team Dunlop Elite alum showed picturesque form as he leaned back over the rear fender, clicking multiple gears down the straightaway as he gapped the chas- ing pack into the first corner. Mumford set the tone for the remaining two motos with his performance in the opening 250 B Limited race, laying down the fastest lap in the early stages of the moto as he methodically inched away from the com- petition. The Californian had amounted a gap of nearly thirty seconds ahead of the second place rider at the end of the ten lap affair, stamping his authority on the 250 B Limited class from the get go. From that point forward, Mumford decided
to stick to the script and continue the same form of domination that he displayed in the first moto -- pull the hoelshot, lay down a couple of sprint laps, and man- age the lead all the way to the checkered flag. Over the course of all three motos, Mumford’s average gap at the finish line was 26.76 seconds ahead of second po- sition, making it look easy from the gate drop to the checkered flag. The AMSOIL | Factory Connection | Honda rider sealed the deal on the 250 B Limited number one plate in the most difficult and most impressive way possible, ending his two year drought without a Loretta Lynn Amateur National Championship.
