IX ROUNDS DOWN..
The third round of the series at Thunder Valley took off the very next weekend, perched amidst the rolling hills and endless mountains of the Colorado countryside. It’s a major test of the machines as well as the riders due to the extremely high altitude, giving the athletes with outstanding fitness even more of an advantage than usu- al. All eyes were on Eli Tomac in the 450 class, as the home state hero as well as the current points leader, but it wasn’t a foregone conclusion that he’d come away victorious. Thunder Valley has given the Colorado native fits in the past couple of years and he’s had some poor luck at the facility, so it would prove to be a major test at this stage of the season. In the 250 class, all eyes were on the championship contenders but yet again Justin Cooper stole the show. The young New Yorker got out front in the opening moto and rode flawlessly for twenty minutes before folding to a pass from Joey Savatgy, but the Pro Circuit Kawasaki rider experienced a bike mal- function in the late stages of the race, handing the Star Racing Yamaha rider his first professional moto victory. Meanwhile, Jeremy and Alex Martin rounded out the podium after a tight battle early in the race while Osborne and Plessinger finished fifth and sixth. The second moto produced one of the gnarliest first corner crashes in recent memory as Savatgy attempted to pull the holeshot from the outside of the starting gate, consequently collecting Osborne and a gaggle of additional riders.
