The first 450 heat of the night went by like a blur –Chad Reed found himself behind James Stewart with the points leader Ryan Dungey breathing down
his neck in the first lap. Reed would be overtaken by Dungey in the third lap after two laps of tough pressure from the KTM rider,
and then Trey Canard would suddenly blast by Reed to challenge Dungey in the third lap. For most of the race, Reed hung on to sixth place, but when Stewart slipped in the sand section in the second to last lap, both Dungey and Reed were bumped up in the rankings – pushing Reed to fourth place.
