Nicholas Schmidt had a solid night of racing at Santa Clara. He got a good start in his heat race running right around 6th on the second lap behind Reed. Charging hard through his heat race Grant makes the pass on Schmidt sending him back a position. He gains a spot back but loses it again before the checkers and finished his heat race in 7th sending him off to the semi.
Schmidt rode a really good semi with a fourth place start right in transfer position. Three laps to
go Bagget got by him sending him back to 5th the last transfer spot. On the last lap he began to battle with Barcia not making it easy to get passed. Barcia eventually was able to run him high giving him that extra space needed for the pass, pushing Schmidt out of his transfer spot. Now stuck in the LCQ he gets a good start jumping right into 2nd. Keeping it close to Clason the entire race he starts to turn on the heat putting pressure on the rider. Schmidt makes the pass with two to go gaining yet another LCQ win. Running around his usual positioning in the main Schmidt was 21st off the start. He moved around between 21st and 22nd before he settled into 20th. He rode the rest of the race in that spot eventually getting the checkered flag and finishing in 20th.
