Google Maps Sleuths Think They’ve Found A Massive Door In Antarctica
By Gergana Krasteva
For centuries, Antarctica’s unex- plored barren landscapes have been a source for conspiracies, sometimes so far fetched that even Jules Verne would raise an eyebrow.
From a theory that Adolf Hitler survived
after World War Two in a base under the ice, to another – credited to Flat Earthers – that Antarctica is a wall that sur- rounds the Earth.
Both have been debunked, but in the age of the Internet
and social media, all is fair game.
Google Maps sleuths now
believe they have discovered a ‘door’ in Antarctica.
A screenshot was posted on Reddit’s Conspiracy channel, which boasts some 2.1 million members.
It shows a glassy rectangular- shaped mass, partly buried unde
r the layers of snow.
Users were quick to take a stab at what this sup- posed door could be used for.
Some suggested it was an under- ground entrance to a base camp, while others said it is a storage facility for seeds.
Whether jokes or
legitimate theo- ries – it was unclear as it never is on Reddit – but some said it was an entrance to Hitler’s hidden bunker.
According to the coordinates, it is just a few hun- dred meters
from Japan’s Sho wa Station, a per- manent research base on East Ongul
Island in Queen Maud Land.
It comprises more than 60 separate buildings, includ- ing living quar- ters, a power plant, sewage treatment facility, observatory and satellite building.
Also present are fuel tanks, water storage, solar panels, a heliport, water retention dam, and radio transmitter.
For what it is worth, the image has racked up more than 100
comments in the last 10 hours since it was post- ed.
This is not the first time Antarctica conspiracies have emerged.
Eagle-eyed Google users claimed they had found a massive pyramid sticking out of snow used by aliens.
In 2019, the con- spiracy theory community went wild after NASA images revealed a strange cloud pattern.
They claimed it was caused by new ‘sonic weapons’ NASA was testing on the frozen conti- nent.
The flat earth community, who believe Earth is flat as a pancake, often use Antarctica as proof to their ludicrous claims.
