'It Was Simply A Hug': House
Candidate Charged With Rape
After Losing Election To Mother
By WKRC Staff
RAPID CITY, S.D. (WKRC) — A defeat- ed South Dakota House of Representatives can- didate is facing a sex- ual assault allegation.
Bud Marty May, 37, was arrested on Nov. 13 and charged with second-degree rape.
He appeared in court Tuesday.
Court documents say he used "force, coer- cion, or threats of immediate and great bodily injury" to rape the woman in "multi- ple ways" in a bar bathroom stall.
The victim claims he told her, "I am 6'8",
white, it is all consen- sual."
According to the police report, officers found the woman hid- ing behind the bar counter with dirt, blood, and an abra- sion on her face.
She apparently told them that the blood was May's, who was
in an altercation earli- er in the day.
May allegedly tried to flee from authorities. Once he was arrest- ed, officers say he first told them he was- n't involved in the inci- dent, then told them, "It was simply a hug."
A judge set his bond at $7,500 and ordered
him to have no con- tact with the victim.
May ran as a Republican candidate for one of two South Dakota House seats in the 2022 election.
The winning candi- dates were his moth- er, incumbent Elizabeth May (R) and Peri Pourier (D).
Norma Rendon came in third, and Bud came in fourth, with two fewer votes than Rendon.
According to Argus Leader, May had also been in court Monday for reportedly driving with expired plates and without insur- ance.
He also apparently has three outstanding warrants from before the election, though it is unclear what the charges are.
