Nicole Dozier
CANDACE AWARD NOMINEE FOR ADVOCACY IN PUBLIC POLICY
Nicole is a 22 year veteran of the NC Justice Center. She joined the anti-poverty organization in 1996 to coordinate a class action of 144,000 individuals against her previous employer the Social Security Administration. Nicole’s work has helping secure hundreds of millions of dollars in benefits for people with disabilities.
In 2007, Nicole became the Assistant Director of the Health Team, in 2014, Co-Director and in 2016, Director of the Health Advocacy Project. The team works statewide using diverse strategies to push for expanded access to health care.
Nicole received a BA in Industrial Relations with Sociology concentration from UNC - Chapel Hill in 1988 and pledged Delta Sigma Theta in 1987. She has been a NC State Bar certified paralegal for 11 years.
Nicole has been on the Apex Town Council since 2013 and has served as the Mayor Pro Tempore of the Council since 2015, serving in her second term. Besides acting as mayor in the mayor’s absence, Nicole is the founding chair of the Council’s environmental committee, chairs the personnel committee and is an alternate liaison to the Apex Chamber of Commerce. Additionally, she created an initiative called Think Apex that involves not only promoting the town but includes community awards, a community events calendar and a day of service.
Nicole was selected as one of five, 2017 Women of Western Wake award recipients. She is active with the NC Advocates for Justice naming her Disability Advocacy Section Lifetime Achievement Award Recipient in 2012; is featured in UNC Chapel Hill’s online Oral History Women with Moxie Project, is a NC Council of Churches board member and is active in other community-focused committees.
