Wanaka’s green
MEGA on track for
2020 opening
THE MITRE 10 MEGA Wanaka store at Three Parks Business Centre now has a roof. What’s more it comes with a 900m2 100kva photovoltaic solar array to help power not just the store but also two electric vehicle charging stations and is grid-tied to boot.
Martin Dippie is co-owner of the new MEGA with his brother, Allan, and says they wanted to create “a resilient and enduring building that had a light touch on the local Wanaka environment, one which demonstrates innovation and sustainability in both the construction materials and technologies that operate the building.”
The internal design of the store makes extensive use of Cross Laminated Timber (CLT) in the mezzanine office areas and café and this material, in addition to offering excellent thermal, seismic and noise ratings, also brings with it carbon sequestration, with the timber acting as a carbon store.
Smart lighting, automatic opening windows for passive ventilation, evaporative cooling units R5 rated Kingspan PIR core fire resistant roof and cladding panels all contribute towards the store goal of being “off the grid” for 50% of the year, weather permitting.
There will also be a team dedicated to reducing the impact of operations through re-use and recycling programmes and a focus on local waste and manufacturing.
With traditional steel and tilt-panel walls, post-tensioned concrete floor and mass timber construction interior, Mitre 10 MEGA Wanaka will be ready to welcome customers on schedule in late November.
