“Following on from a soft October, the consent data for the November 2020 month once again reflect the ups and downs of New Zealand’s intentions to build”
By volume, YTD November 2020, 38,624 dwellings were consented (+4.2% on YTD Nov 2019 and the highest number since July 1974), Stats NZ once again noting another “rapid increase” in the number of medium to high-density housing being consented, in Auckland particularly.
By region, Auckland, Hawke’s Bay, and Taranaki had record levels of new homes consented in the November 2020 year but other regions, notably Waikato, softened.
The numbers of new dwellings consented in the year ended November 2020 (compared with the November 2019 year) were:

Turning to non-residential for the year ended November 2020, the building types with the highest values were:
• Education:$1.1billion(+9.3%onYTD
Nov 2019).
• Storage:$1.1billion(+20%).
• Offices, administration & public
transport: $967 million (–1.3%).
Stats NZ’s building consent data for December is scheduled for release on 4 February 2021 (we will post online first), while the data set for the December 2020 quarter’s Value of Building Work put in Place will be released on 5 March.
