OCTOBER BUILDING CONSENTS
Stats NZ’s data for the October 2020 month has residential consents growing but non-residential consents still in negative growth. By value, consents for the October 2020 month were as follows: • Residential:$1.5billion(+3.8%onOct
2019).
• Non-residential: $510 million
(–18.1%).
• Total:$2.1billion(+0.6%).
By volume, 3,659 new dwellings were consented (+7.2% on Oct 2019).
By value, YTD October 2020 consents were as follows:
• Residential:$15.9billion(+1.5%on
YTD Oct 2019).
• Non-residential: $6.9 billion (–9.1%). • Total: $22.8 billion (–2.0%).
By volume, YTD October 2020, 37,981 dwellings were consented, +2.8% on YTD Oct 2019 and the highest number since 1974, driven again by townhouses, flats & units (+35.6% on YTD Oct 2019).
The number of new standalone houses consented however was –0.5% in the October year, while apartment numbers were –22.5% and retirement village units –24.5%.
By region and volume of dwellings, in the year ended October 2020 Canterbury led the growth stakes (+9.4%), followed by Auckland (+5.1%), Wellington (+2.4%) and Rest of North Island (+1.8%) while Waikato and Rest of South Island were both down (–3.6% and –6.0%).
The building consent data for November is scheduled for release on
14 January 2021m while the December 2020 quarter Value of Building Work put in Place data set will be released on 5 March.
