ALTHOUGH THE 2021 Resene Total Colour Awards sadly couldn’t be celebrated in person, the winners were announced towards the end of last year.
Fittingly, given Resene celebrated its 75th year of operation last year, if there is a common theme running through the winning entries it’s one of renewal.
“With so many projects delayed over the last 18 months, the
2021 winners reflect a pronounced shift to making the most of what already exists, with many older projects lovingly brought to life with painstaking attention to detail, care and fresh coats of colour,” says Resene.
Indeed, the top award went to a heritage project, as part of the renovation and sympathetic repurposing of the iconic 1920s Public Trust Building in Christchurch by local firm Three Sixty Architecture.
Located on the western edge of the Ōtākaro/Avon River Precinct and designed by Cecil Wood, this project took out the 2021 Resene Total Colour Master Nightingale Award, as well as the Resene Total Colour Heritage Award (see photos 1 & 2 on the previous pages – by Jason Mann).
The judges called this project “A proud winner, this building has a captivating presence. The quality of the finishing, the colour palette and the architecture all fit perfectly and are just right.
“The colours bring out the calibre of the building and feel at one with the strength of the architecture.
“This project has been treated with years of dedicated effort and respect, holding onto and preserving history with a delightfully classical treatment.”
Having chosen to focus from here on the residential and smaller scale winners, but staying with the theme of renovation, the 2021 Resene Total Colour Residential Interior Award went to an impressive Sydney apartment named “Galleria Sanctum” by Sydney-based designers Kate St James and Catherine Whitting of St James Whitting (photo 3 – Marian Riabic).
With a colour palette derived from the client’s Australian Aboriginal art collection, the judges said: “Colour purposefully defines each space to embue it with its own mood and personality. Careful consideration of sightlines from one room to the next takes you on a curated colour journey.
“The artwork and the colourways play off each other, providing a perfect environment in which the beauty of the artwork flourishes.”
Closer to home, and of contrasting scale and formality, the 2021 Resene Total Colour Residential Interior Colour Maestro Award went to a compact College Street Apartment in Wellington by Shaw & Shaw Architects of Christchurch (photo 4).
The judges called the project “Cosy but not closed in, this project achieves a lot in a small space, working mindfully with the age of the property to enhance each space while still being sympathetic to its era.
“With a focus on easy living, the colours come together into a sophisticated palette with memorable touches of colourful surprises.”
Turning from inside to outside, and crossing back over
to Australia once again, the 2021 Resene Total Colour Residential Exterior Award was taken out by the restoration and rethinking of a Modernist mid-1960s suburban Sydney
