“How ridiculous,” said the Chief Inspector. “I would never have a dog that would put his personal needs above mine.”
“And I do not think I need such a dog myself,” said the lord.
They both turned to the Peddler and the lord demanded that he take his dog back. “I do not intend to return your money, a deal is a deal,” said the Peddler.
“That is no longer important, just remove this odious dog from my property,” replied the lord.
The Peddler untied the rope from the dog, which yelped and barked joyously. The Peddler laughed and said to the dog, “Yes, yes, you can come home now and continue to be the smartest dog in the world.”
As they rode off in the Peddler’s carriage, I heard the Peddler say to the dog, “You know, you never will make a very good guard dog.”
