The Peddler paused and turned to the lord, whose silence was admission that what the dog had said was true. The Peddler continued and explained that the dog said that he often slept in the master’s bedroom and had seen the lord put the really quality jewelry in a small box, which he hides under the bed. Now all eyes turned to the lord, whose face alternated between bright red and ashen.
“Well?” asked the Chief Inspector, looking straight at the lord.
The lord replied, “Yes, it is true, all he said is true and my more valuable jewelry is in a storage box under my bed.”
“So this man is obviously not the thief,” said the Chief Inspector, “For if the dog can talk, it would have told him of the real jewels and if it can’t really talk, then somehow he knew about them and they were not stolen. “I still don’t understand,” said the lord. “Why didn’t the dog attack the thief?”
“Well,” began the Peddler, very slowly, “He told me that it seemed like a very dangerous situation and that there was a good chance he could be seriously injured if he attacked the thief. No one was home so there was no danger of harm coming to anyone else. Most of the jewelry was fake and you probably have it insured for more than it is worth, so you will make a tidy profit off the burglary.” The lord had turned beet red and everyone else, even the Chief Inspector, were rolling with laughter.
