He began spinning the dial and the safe opened. He removed the jewelry, piece by piece, examined them and put them in a velvet bag. After he had removed all of the jewelry, he left by the same window, knocking over a small vase in the process and leaving his lantern on the table by the window.”
The lord and Chief Inspector looked at each other and
they both shrugged. “It is just as it appears to have happened,” said the Chief Inspector. “He turned to the Peddler and said, “It is as if the dog or you, really was there during the robbery.”
“Tell me this,” demanded the lord, “If this is what really happened last night, why didn’t the dog attack the thief, if the thief was someone other than you!”
“He did explain that to me,” replied the Peddler. “When he first came into the room, he noticed that the man was quite large and that he had a shiny revolver in his waistband. This thief seemed to know what he was doing and could be quite dangerous. The dog said that he knew that no one else was home so there was no danger of anyone being injured by the thief. However, if he had charged out from under the couch, the thief could have had enough time to turn and get off several shots, any one of which could be fatal.”
“This is incredible and totally unbelievable, “said the Chief Inspector.
