“What did he say?” demanded the lord. “Oh, come on,” said the Chief Inspector, “This man is just kidding us.”
“Oh no, he told me exactly what happened,” said the Peddler. “Well, please enlighten us with this dog’s tale,” and the chief Inspector chuckled at his little joke. “The dog said that he was in the kitchen when he heard breaking glass. He went into the hallway and heard more glass being broken in the study.”
“Yes, yes, there was broken glass all over the floor. Three large panes were broken,” said the lord.
The Peddler continued the dog’s account of what happened. “The dog said that as he entered the dark room, he saw a very large man crawl through the window.”
“Huh,” stammered one of the young policeman, “The footprints outside the window are quite large and deep. They would have been made by a man much larger than any of us here.”
“Interesting,” said the Chief Inspector, “now please continue.”
The Peddler continued with his story. “The dog crawled on his belly until he was under the couch and had a clear view of the man in the room. The man had a lantern and went directly to a picture. He removed the picture and behind it was a safe.
