An angry lord replied, “Maybe to confuse us.” “Well maybe, but you just told me of the tremendous sum of money you paid this man just a year ago, why would he risk coming back to rob you?” “And,” continued the Chief Inspector, “this fellow is not from around here, how would he know that you, your family and all of your staff would be at another estate attending a party?”
The lord looked from the Chief Inspector to the Peddler and then back to the Chief Inspector. Then he said “The dog must have told him.”
“What! The dog told him?” said the Chief Inspector. “Why, yes,” said the lord. “This dog and the Peddler can talk to each other.” The Chief Inspector could not contain himself and began to laugh. “Oh sure my lord, they talk about the news events and who is favored in the soccer match.”
Then the Peddler said, “Oh, it is true, the dog and I can talk to each other.” At this, the Chief Inspector got serious and said, “Are you both crazy or is it me?”
“No really,” replied the Peddler. “We can communicate quite well. In fact, why don’t I ask the dog to tell us what happened last night.” The Chief Inspector’s jaw dropped, “You expect me to believe that this dog is going to be our witness and tell us who robbed the house last night?”
