“That’s him,” shouted the Lord and pushed a policeman toward the Peddler.
The lord was practically shouting at a policeman, “This is the man I have been telling you about, he sold me this dog and he is the one responsible.”
The confused Peddler then asked, “What is all this about, what is going on?” An older policeman, who was obviously in charge, walked over and said, “There was a robbery here last night.” “Oh, how terrible,” said the Peddler.
“Don’t act so innocent,” said the lord as he glared at the Peddler. “Just a minute,” said the policeman as he stepped between the lord and the Peddler. “Someone came through a window during the night, when everyone was at the neighboring estate attending a party and stole all of the jewelry out of the manor house safe.”
The policeman then pointed to the dog tied up at the gate. “Only the dog was left in the house.” “To guard the house,” shouted the lord. “And I know you were involved because the dog did nothing to prevent the theft.”“Now just a minute,” said the policeman (who then introduced himself to the Peddler as Chief Inspector), “I am conducting this investigation. Lord, why would someone who had robbed you last night, return here today?”
